spring potting up amorphs

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

ok..i thought i cant..i hope im not..the only one who goes
NUTS with collecting amorphs..
??? please say im not alone...?? :)
i just potted up 48 konjac,and sauromatums
pot sizes from 1 gal to 5 gal..
i have 9 more konjac to pot up.. 6 are in bloom /just past
blooming now..
and i have about 30+ small konjac small "bulb/corms" to pot
up..
maybe i'll need to sell some off next spring on ebay ..
:)
anyone else potting up your corms???
potting mix..pot sizes to corm size..
this yr..im going to pot up all my amorphs.. i wasnt happy with
plantings i did in raised beds.. they got way to much sun..

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Mine will get potted very soon now that the weather is finally getting warmer. I don't have as many as you, I have MANY other plants to care for in addition to those so it can get crazy here this time of year. I just broke out all my carnivorous plants from the fridge and started waking them up.

Potting mix is either Miracle grow MIX (not soil!) or Pro-Mix and lots of Perlite.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

very cool tommy..i have friends who grow carnivore plants..
i dont have any.. yet.. LOL.. ya start with something and BAM..
youre hooked.. :)
i wish some nursery around here would carry Pro-Mix.. its a good
potting mix..
rain this morning.. im off to fertilize the lawns.. YEA>. free water. !!!

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

i cut back 2 konjac flower spikes last week..
other 2 are close..last one maybe another week
ive got my potting mix ingredients ..i plan to pot up in
probably bigger pots then they need.. im thinking..
mmm .. maybe i can encourage the corms.."hey guys..
look at all this room".. " why dont ya get huge for me" ...
LOL
what do ya all think.. might work???
heheehe
i bought a TON..not really..but i bet i bought 30+ bags of
pine bark fines.. and i dont know how many boxes of pumice
i bought over the winter..
geeshh.. LOL
anyways..i have plenty of ingredients for putting the corms in
bigger pots..
still would like to find a source of HUGE plastic pots.. there is
a feed/seed country store south of provo.. i called and they might..
have to check them out.. u know..for my biggest paeonifolius..and
big titanum..
now.. lets have a good summer!!!!

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

well im getting there..:) i only have a couple big konjac to pot up
and about 100 small finger ones..
i have got to keep my eye out better for 1gal pots..lol
the 1 gal pots seem huge for the small mini corms..but "hopefully"
if i grow them well..they will be nice sized in sept..:)
i get my large titanum tomorrow..yea !!!!
got the HUGE pot and potting mix all set..
its like christmas.. LOL
im hooked..arent i..?? LOL :)

I've just potted up my A. prainii, it's a winter grower for me. By the first couple of weeks into summer it starts to shrivel and go dormant.

One of my small titanums is going dormant again, for the third time. Its sibling is still powering on and has never been dormant. The larger one got hit by the sun as it shifted and some of the tree canopy dropped. There's some leaf burn but it still going okay.

Finally dug up the symonianus tubers and put them in with their bulblets (they do it differently to bulbifer).

Only got 3 of the konjacs out of the ground, the wallabies moved in and knocked out the plant markers. Had put the bamboo stakes in so the tubers could be dug up without cutting through them. The ones in tubs are withered but still in soil.

The bulbifer in tubs are still in soil. Those in the garden had their markers knocked about by the wallabies. There's so many that I won't worry about digging them all out.

The paeoniifolius are mostly withered but some young ones have only recently sprouted. Guess they want to grow in winter.

The galbra are finally disappearing for the season. The last couple have more yellow than green now.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

i dont know what id do if i had wallabies commin in my yard and
messing with things..:) let alone crocs.. i have garden snakes..thank
goodness no rattlers..
i got my larger titanum today.. YEA
heres a couple pics of it..
i put it in a big 22 in ( 56cm ) width pot..
the corm is 17 lbs ( 7.7kg)
is 11 in (27 cm) across and almost 10 in (25 cm) tall
i have it in my new potting mix..
geeshhhh.. i kept watering..and watering..and watering..
lol ...i watered it on the lawn..so wouldnt waste the water.. but
geesshhhhh.. LOL

WOW! That's a biggie! Nice!

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

its a biggie alright..lol..i may end up building a greenhouse sooner
than i thought..LOL :)
it will be ok outside till sept.. after that.. mmm.. and how long it
stays in vegy stage..
i know others have posted on this.. would like to get more feedback
on topic...
... what affect does growing any amorphs..konjac,titanum,other tropicals,
paeonifolius... in "strong sun" over "semi shaded sun" have on vegetative
growth..and therefore..and im making an "assumption " here..on the developement
of the corm...????
i read several scientific/commercial papers (from malasia) on this..there
results showed better corm growth when grown in semi shade as opposed to
more sun/full sun.. of course these were grown in tropical environments..
those of us here..i would bet ..like me.. our amorphs are our babies.. and we
pamper them..
thoughts????? much thanks...
almost got all the konjac planted.. lol just some of the little fingers to pot up
now..

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

tommy..?? hows your konjac doing??
have many petioles broke surface of potting mix yet??
about 1/3 of my konjac have.. i put the largest potted ones under protection
next to house..faces south..so lots of sun..and warmth.. hope that helps them
come alive sooner..:)
i'll move them in back once summer heat is here ..and under some
afternoon shade..
last yr..i had most in alot of afternoon sun..they did fine..but.i think i'll give them
a little break from full on sun this yr..
its going to be a forest back there..LOL from big 24" pots to 2 gal pots..
its a drug..im sure of it... :)

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

My biggest hasn't poked out yet, still have 2 more big ones to plant, I have to go buy a few larger pots for them today.
I planted some quarter sized corms last week.

Cool weather here has slowed their growth.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

i hear ya tommy on the bigger pots.. i did splurge and get
largest HD had.. i have 3 of my largest titanums, 2 of my largest konjac
and biggie paeonifolius in them..
the titanum are in the house..and havent broke top of potting mix..yet..
one konjac has..petiole looks pretty good sized too..heres hoping i get
some nice corm growth on them!!! :)
up to today weve had some nice late spring weather.. a few 80F days..
nites mid 50sF.. today.. YEA!!! rain.. and i guess tomorrow too.. !!!
YEA>> lol.. only a farmer..or gardener would be this excited over rain..
LOL :)
my huge pots..im going to have to get neighbour kid to help me carry them..
or find a used trolley.. dry weight its not bad.. i think i used just over 8 cf potting
mix ..in each pot.. watered.. omg.. they are hyneria makers for sure..
?? tommy..how many small konjac corms are u going to pot up this season??
you have a few big konjac corms..i would think u got some nice baby fingers
off them ...
im stopping myself..from buying anymore amorphs.. mmm..well.. except if
the ones i want come up somewhere.. hint hint..anyone.. amorph discus-salvae
and gigas !!! hint..hint.. :)

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

finally looks like summer is here.. i hope..lol
most of my konjac are poking there petioles out of potting
mix.. yea...
im going to leave them in south facing area against house for the
heat (especially nites) until we get steady warm weather..
i think its a "typical" early summer so far.. im just anxious for
warmer/hot weather.. :)
i wont take the big pots with my titanums out until nites stay in 60sF
id like to haul them out in the day..but.. i dont want a hernia ..
i saw some amorph gigas on ebay from germany.. didnt get them..:(
bids went higher .. i gotta just bite the bullet..and pay up.. sigh..

noonamah, Australia

First day of winter was the other day, minimum got down to 21.9C and maximum 34.0C. Relative humidity in the morning went from 93% down to 37% mid afternoon.Long range forecast is 60% chance of above average maximum temps for the winter here, 70% chance of above average minumum temps.

I won't be back home til end of this week but most of my of my Amorphs are dormant. Quite a few smaller A. paeoniifolius are still going though. And of course the A. titanums. I have a Dracontium that's still going strong, thought it would have turned in by now. Also my Giraffe's Knees (Gonatopus bovinii, not the animal) are still going strong. The thing that would be nice is some rain. But it's not called the Dry Season for nothing.

Dave, I had some A gigas lined up a few years back but then the seller said there was a bit of a delay. Later there was nothing, and I haven't seen it available ever since. I guess that happens.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

tropic.. u sure spend alot of time away for work.. guess it makes
the reunion of home nice..:)
the NOAA will have there weather prediction/forcast out around the
10th.. they are pretty good at there "predictions" for N.america.. long term
prediction for where i am..utah.. is above average dry, above average warmer
i would like more moisture..but i am not on good speaking terms with mother
nature..i guess..LOL :)
ive been chatting with a guy in germany..he grows all the "tropical" amorphs..
im thinking from leaf cuttings/and or seed..
he had the 2 gigas up on ebay..but..as i said earlier post.. i gotta pay up to get them..
my largest titanum 17# (7.7 kg) is just starting to pop out of potting mix.. yea!!
if temps hold where there at now.. mid/high 80s F nites 60s F i'll have neighbour
kid help me haul them out to backyard..
i see on ebay tindara has a biggie titanum up.. 31 # (14 kg) ..i think right now its a bit past my ability to keep. i gotta get a greenhouse up...
watch out for those crocs tropic !!!!

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

were having some HOT weather here.. 93F today..suppose to hit 100F
tomorrow..whew.. i feel for the lawn..
only watering at nite..
i had to move all my potted up konjac, hewettii, paeonifolius, titanums
into complete shade today.. well.. actually gets morning sun..but not after
12 noon ish..
i wasnt going to move them there till end of june.. let them soak up the sun/warmth
and get growing faster.. but alas...
the new potting mix im using is keeping the pots draining well.. i do water every day..
so im sure that will be my routine all summer.. which is ok by me..
hope the corms put on some nice size this growing season..
? tommy... hows your konjac growth going??? are you getting warmer weather there now???

noonamah, Australia

Yesterday I had a maximum of 32.2C. Last night it dropped to 18.4C but by the time I got up this morning (5:30AM) it was back up to 21.3C so felt okay. (Less than 2 weeks to the shortest day.)

Apart from the titanums all the others have gone dormant except for this little one (photo below) which has only just started growing. It's in the symonianus container but I suspect it's a paeoniifolius. They've got into just about everything and they come up any time they like. Most of them though stick to the summer growth routine. My symonianus have always been strictly summer growers, so I'll soon see if there's any renegades amongst them. Paeoniifolius can't disguise themselves as symonianus and get away with it.

Dave, I'm away from home more than I'm at home - the price for being able to pay a mortgage.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

tommy??? how r your amorphs doing now???
i posted on "whos growing titanums" forum asking question
if anyone is experiencing slow comming out of dormancy..and/or
shooting up leaf petiole..mmmm.. is that redundant?? i think it is..
:)
my konjac.. interesting.. my small corms.. under 4" ( 10 cm) are the
agressive growers.. so far.. i have 5 or 6 konjac that size that are in
leaf now..close to unfurl.. the largest ones..7+" ( 18 cm) have petioles
up.. but are taking there time..
i didnt pollinate any konjac this yr.. so flower spikes withered and corm
went directly to petiole ..
no ripening of seed..
wondered how yours are doing???

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

None of mine have broken the soil surface yet. REAL SLOW to wake this year, it's been kind of cool here.

Everything else is growing like weeds though.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

seems many of my correspondences with other amorph growers..
all species.. are having same experience tommy..
except for my smaller konjac corms..
they truely follow their own time table.. :)
my tomatoes are going gang busters.. i have tomatoes on ..this is
early for me.. i might have a "ripe" tomato to eat by end of june.. for me
unheard of.. LOL :)

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

I've got a lot of Kale this year, also doing collards for the first time. Saute either one in some extra virgin olive oil, minced garlic and chopped sweet onions and YUM!

Also growing carrots and sweet onions and garlic, tomatoes.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

probably a good yr for those vegys..if it stays coolish..
kale sure has become the "trendy" vegy lately ..and pricey too..
if u have enough of it..u can sell some..and use the $$$ to buy more
amorphs.. :) eheheheee

noonamah, Australia

Looks like that amorph that decided to come up nearly middle of winter is a paeoniifolius. It's only companion nearby is a Dracontium amazonense that refuses to go to "sleep". I guess I'm just not enough of a strict disciplinarian, the plants are taking over, LOL.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

sounds like u r a fantastic gardener tropic.. :)
id like to think im an ok gardener.. but..i give alot of credit to the
soil.. of course i have done the ammending..:)
i swear i can stick anything in the gardens..and off it goes..
i gotta get out there and take some pics..
alot of my konjac are taking off now.. finally..
small titanums are going strong.. larger titanums still taking there
own sweet time..
largest paeonifolius is going good..
im sure once root systems get good and established..thats when the
titanums will grow like weeds...

noonamah, Australia

Don't know about the "fantastic gardener" bit, maybe fanatical though, LOL.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

from your experience..pics u have put on.. looks pretty good
to me tropic !!!
fanatical.. mmmm. i think that fits all of us here.. :) LOL
i was wondering about one of my largest pots and petiole that was
shooting up..
i thought it was a konjac.. wrong.. i gotta put labels in these pots..
it was my big paeonifolius..the petiole was all bumpy.. and not same
colour as my other konjac..
i know there can be "sports" of plants.. but..this was a very big petiole..
and small bumps all over.. no bugs..healthy leaves..
checked out pics of other konjac,species..and there it was.. paeonifolius..
with same petiole appearance as mine..
thought id have time today to take pics..and $&^#@()$ camera battery
was low.. so charging it tonite..hopefully get some pics next couple days..

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Well FINALLY some of my small corms are spouted, none of the big ones yet. They are really behind this year.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

tommy..its been a different season..huh...
i see your weather has been mid 80sF nites 60sF..and some
good rain???
out here.. geeshhh. its HOT... weve been 100F+ for over a week..no
relief until..maybe after 4th.. then high 90sF..
here pic of some of my amorphs..

Thumbnail by tropicalnut777
Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

We have been HAMMERED with rain this year and so far this month we've got 1.55". I got a Weather station (Davis Vantage Vue) about a year and a half ago, so far this year we've received 25.16" of rain.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

wow.. we'll take 1/2 of that out here in utah tommy !!!
ive forgotten when we had rain last.. mmm.. what is rain?? ive read
about it..heard about it... sigh..
are you having a tough time keeping your amorphs from getting soggy??

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

I use lots of perlite so soggy is not an issue.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

glad to hear it tommy...
still.. please send us some of that rain......

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Well my biggest Konjac FINALLY broke the surface. ABout 4" up now.
About time.

We're in a heat wave now here, low-mid 90's, high heat index, currently 103F.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

that time of year again ..yea.. i think ..lol
nite temps are mid to high 50sF now..and all my konjac are sprouting
petioles..
ive collected my potting mix over early spring..picked up a few more "larger"
pots.. to accomodate the larger corms..
i do like the "fabric pots".. i have most of my "tropical" amorphs in them..and they
like it.. so far..
i know i'll water more..
i have some clearing out of area where i'll put the amorphs this summer..
mostly leveling the area.. thinking of even putting down an inch of gravel just
for better drainage..
??? anyone else got a start on potting up amorphs for this growing season???

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Mine are planted and one is poking through and about 3" tall. It's been SLOW to warm up here this spring.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

u had a snowy, cold winter didnt ya tommy???
its really heated up here..hopefully cools off a bit..
we hit 91F today..tomorrow same..

Poughkeepsie, NY(Zone 6a)

Yeah the winter was harsh this year. Not the worst but bad. Getting more 70-90 days now although today it won't get out of the 50's I don't think.

Mountain View, HI

Aloha,
Thought I would add my experience. I repotted my Konjac and Bulbafil (sp?) a couple of weeks ago.
Immediately got my very first Konjac bloom. About 18 inches tall before it opened. Also have a good size Bulbafil that I've never removed from the pot. That one has had two blooms since March. Last years bloom stalk is still there with seeds. Maybe I should repot this one this year. I know there is more than one corm in the pot. What is the best time to do that???
Now waiting for all those corms that got repotted to do something. Four have shoots showing. I'm now watering regularly so hopefully in the next month or so I will see some growth. Certainly the corms are bigger than last year.
This is just a side interest for me as I'm an Orchid Cactus nut.

Provo, UT(Zone 5a)

great to hear from you microb!! especially another fan from the
tropics.. we have a few living in tropics post here..i always get alot from
them on there practices..and try to encorporate some of there ideas in my
practices..im in utah..a desert..sigh..
im getting there with my potting. the larger konjac are potted .most of the medium
sized ones..
i am putting the corms in very oversized pots..hoping that will help in konjac really put on
some size this growing season..
im almost out of big pots.. 24"+.. im completely out of mid sized pots..sigh..i gotta pick
up more on my garage/yard sales trips..i have TONS of gallon pots..

Mountain View, HI

My neighbor got me started.

We leave the plants in pots on outside greenhouse benches year round and just stop watering at the end of the season. When its time to wake them up we pot them up into larger pots and start the cycle again.. My largest Bulbafil has been outdoors for three or four years, in the tropical rain and just let it do its thing. Temp never goes below 50f.
Where is the best place to trade or buy different varieties.
