What kind of roach is this?

Coyne Center, IL

I have a hunch as to what it might be, based on research, but wanted to get other opinions.

We have seen them for the last 9-10 months. Didn't see any from Novemberish until mid-March.

Mainly found in the garage/basement (on the same level, partly underground). Have found a couple small ones on the kitchen floor during the day last fall. Also seen several outside, one on the back porch and one on our deck both in the afternoon. It is my hunch they are coming from outside (we live in a 70 year old house with a foundation in need of sealing)

Last fall we only found 5 or 6 over the course of a couple months, but since it has gotten warmer, we have caught about a dozen in the basement on sticky traps with bait. Also found a few dead ones.

All look to be nymphs. I have not seen one bigger than the large one in the pictures.

They resemble wood cockroaches

themoonhowl,

This is precisely what I thought.

Can anyone else confirm these are probably wood roaches?

At this stage, it is difficult to be certain. Wood roaches certainly are a strong possibility, but if that's what they are, I would expect to see some males (http://www.pbase.com/markb249/image/135986172) - they are good fliers (for cockroaches) and may be attracted to lights at night.

I am fairly certain they are wood roaches. I found one more outside on the porch that was near identical to wood roach pictures, with the light mahogany fading to dark brown at the rear.

Do they become darker when indoors?

I also remember killing something last fall that resembled that male in the picture you linked to. I'm pretty sure it had wings.

I will leave the lights on for a bit...

With these roaches, color in itself is not always a reliable identifying characteristic. Not only is there individual variation within species, there are several different species of Parcoblatta.
