How Do I Propagate the Taiwan Cobra Lily?

Perth, Australia(Zone 11)

Hi Guys,

Jake & I have just purchased some Arisaema Taiwanese seeds and have read that they are quite easy to start & grow. I just have a few more questions before getting on with the germination.

I noticed on the Dave's Garden Info & Guide page that this plant is better suited from zone hardiness 6-9. We are in zone 11. Has anyone grown them successfully outside of recommended hardiness zone? I can see that they prefer the cooler weather, and since we have heat in summer that goes in to the 40 degrees Celsius range, they might not survive. We'll bring them inside (they will be potted) and keep them in the coolest place. If we have success, I will post on the forums and keep you guys up to date.

The other thing is, one website said that they prefer chalky, loamy or sandy soil. I'm don't really know what 'chalky' soil is. Can someone please tell me? Would potting mix be out of the question? We were considering using Perlite/ Vermiculite/ Coir and Propogation Sand. What are your thoughts on this?

What is the general germination rate?

Kind regards,

Jake & Jahna

Hello there Down Under-
I don't know anything about growing Arisaema, but I do know about "chalky" soil. It is a term I mostly see in British or European books, describing their soils in areas of limestone (chalk) bedrock. These soils are alkaline. Plants that grow naturally in 'chalky' soils often need to be limed. Here is a link:

Have fun and let us know how they do.
