Please, if anyone can tell me, when you transplant your hydrangeas do the soil balls like to be freed, or are they fussy about their root ball??
I need to transplant 2 of them to a shadier area which is also safe from the deer. They are not happy with the hot morning sun in the summertime.
Thank you,
Evelyn

Transplanting hydrangea...
Evelyn, I'm getting ready to plant a mophead that's been in a pot over the winter. When you take it out of the pot, and if you find the roots entangled and matted, take a knife and make 4 equal slices from the top to the bottom of the rootball. Plant and water in, then keep moist for a couple of weeks, until it has rooted in. Give it morning sun and afternoon shade.
Thank you, Kay. That was the answer that I needed. Last year I received some larger plants from Wayside and they were a bit entangled. Now I know that they can be loosened so they will grow better. Some plants do not like any root disturbance whatsoever, so I did not want to ruin their chance of success. ^_^
