Help me with my papaya!

Boonville, MO(Zone 5a)

Help! I ate a papaya the othe day and saved the core. I thought there would be seeds in it. I let it dry so it didnt slide out of my hand when I tried to cut into it. Gee, if anyone here knows anything about papayas you are already shaking your heads!

Well, the core is just a hard as nails lining on THE seed itself. This seed is HUGE!! Well, after about 2 miutes of trying to cut into it I finally did and saw that it was all one seed and now I have two halves. So now what? Is it ruined? can it survive being cut in half like that? I put it in a cup of water and placed it in a warm area last night and went back today and looked (dreaming it had already sprouted , lol) and I had papaya tea! The water is now the color of regular dark tea. I can't see the seed at all. I don't know if it is useless and I should just throw it away or if it will actually come through it and be ok.

Anyone have any ideas? I don't want this cup o papaya tea sitting around for weeks if nothing will come of it.

TIA, Angel

I would help if I could, but I'm confused about what you have.

A papaya to me is a Paw Paw - dull yellowy orange, 6" or so long, with hundreds of prickly black seeds in the middle. You'd sow them somewhere warm.

Maybe you have a mango seed? The fruit is about 4" long, pale greenish with red markings, definitely flattened, and the seed is about half the size of the fruit, flat, with a tough woody fluffy coat. I have problems germinating these, but theoretically, you can either take the seed out of the case and sow it, or you can slit the seed case and sow it, again, somewhere warm.

If you've cut it in half, I think you may as well throw it out now.

Sounds like a mango to me since papayas have LOTS of round shiny black seeds. If it is a mango, prize the shell covering the seed apart and plant the seed on it's side in potting soil on a sunny windowsill. If you wrap the seed in a dish cloth, it makes it easier to hold on to.

Yep, it's a mango. I am holding out some hope still but just because I am busy with other things so I thought I'd let it stay in the cup of water a bit longer. If I check it in about a week and nothing is still about to sprout out of the better half then I am pitching it. Heck, maybe I'll pitch it outside in the dirt just in case. What can I say, I'm an optimist!

Thanks for the help.
