Collecting Straw Flower Seeds

McMinnville, TN

I saved the dried blooms from my straw flowers and I am confused-where are the seeds?
I would appreciate any info. anyone could give me.

Good morning Boopsie! The seeds are actually at the end of the petals... sorta like how Dandelions are. The "petals" of the strawflower are really light and act like little parachutes so the plant can self-sow more easily by blowing those little seeds (with petals) around on the breeze. If you just save the petals, chances are each will have its own seed on the end of it.

I hope that helps! =)

Thanks so much! I saved the whole bloom-petals and the center. I've noticed the center is just a pain since they want to float around in the air. Yes I will have plenty pentals and will get rid of the center.
You were such a big help!

Oh good, thank you! And you're welcome very much! =) Just keep a close eye on the "end" part of the petal when you remove it from the center.. to make sure the seed is attached. Ya wanna make sure the whole flower is totally dried when you collect your seeds.

And, most importantly of all, HAVE FUN! < =D

I must be blind! I have carefully removed the petals and haven't found anything that looks like a seed. I wish I had a good memory so I could remember what the seeds looked like when I planted them.

AH! Here ya go, I found a post from Critterologist here, and she's included a pic of the seeds....

This link takes you straight to the close-up of the pic. Just click on "back to post" to read the whole post.

I've collected the seeds from flowers at work (I work at a nursery), but I've never taken pics of them, and don't currently have any to take pictures of, I'm sorry. =( But this post from Critter should help you! =)

Thanks so much! Now I know and I checked and there are a few seeds in each center part of the straw flower. I hope I can save them since they are so small!

When I'm not sure which is the seed and which is the chaff, sometimes I'll separate out some of each thin g that I suspect, then try to germinate some of each on damp coffee filters. Whatever sprouts, that must have been the seed.

That was how I found out that what I thought was all chaff really had tons of viable alyssum seeds in it. Now I know that my alyssum blooms and vines have SO much seed that I can shake a bunch of dry vines in a paper bag or tub, and find plenty of clean seeds in the bottom. Then I can throw what's left somewhere I wouldn't mind alyssujm taking over.

In doubt, I save the whole seed head, then rub it and re-plant all of it.
