New corn from Burpee?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

poor germination is the story I hear, from 1 in 3 to a bit better.

Alexandria, VA

I'm having poor germination as well.

Well since there seems to be a germination complaint. Maybe I should try boosting the corn with a soak in water laced with 2% hydrogen peroxide.

I have seen this variety in the Burpee catalog so am very interested in how things turn out.

Guess it's time for an update.

Things fared better than I thought they would after the abysmal germination rates. Stalks grew good, had a few minor complaints as I said above. But for the most part, I've been pretty pleased with the results.

So far, I've pulled about 8 ears(30 or so left on the stalks) and most have been full/developed. Only the very tip isn't quite filled out. My fault, for not helping pollination and/or pulling a few too early. It's looking like about 2 ears per stalk for me.

Another good point was that I never had to spray a thing on them. Not one bug found on them other than spiders. Seems like all the bugs in my yard are only going after the Brugmansias and skipping over the veggie plants.

Think the most important part of any edible is taste and On The Deck corn tasted really good! Caught me off guard(shocked how flavorful) when I first tried it. I ate a few raw and they were good. Threw a few in the smoker....even better. But then again, I haven't had fresh, homegrown corn in awhile. So my expectations were low.

Dang that looks good. Do you ship? Lol

Germination has just been awful - less than 50%. I had about 20 seeds left over after initially planting them outside and when the seeds outside did so poorly I tried the elementary school method of germinating between wet paper towels. Still less than 50% germination. Really bummed about that.

Might be the cooler Va weather... seems some worked better sown later this year than earlier. Our springs were strange this year.

So far, my germination has been 100%. I'm doing two platings in earthboxes two weeks apart. I did start my seeds indoors before planting into the earthboxes, so I'm not sure how direct sowing would do. So far, my plants look healthy and happy.

I bet the soil temps are having a big effect on germination. We started things at the same time but it was much cooler, at least here.

great to glean from u all on growing corn !! this is my 1st yr growing it..
im doing 2 plantings..so i can have corn "hopefully" late july..then mid aug
1st planting is 'peaches & cream' 2nd planting (will put in end of june) will
be incredible..
i planted 7 - 15 ft rows.. i put small furrows between the rows..mostly for watering..
my soil has good compost in it..good drainage..
the peaches & cream have been up for over a week now..and most are around
5-6" tall..
i understand corn needs alot of nitrogen.. i gave it a drowning of rabbit manure tea today.. also added alfalfa meal to rows as well.
im thinking the manure tea wont give the corn the N it will need..
ive read using urea, ammonium nitrate.. i really dont want to use these..
blood meal is high in N.. and moderately fast acting..
what are u all using for fertilizer??
much thanks..

Outdoor temps wouldn't have any effect on the germination indoors though. It was poor germination no matter when I planted outdoors or indoors.
