Frankenstorm recovery

Pod rental is an interesting idea. I don't know if the lot at the healthclub is cleared yet, though. I can also relate to being the one who wants to keep stuff. What's tragic for this family is that everything is degrading with mold and mildew as time goes by.

We don't even have a disaster, and as we make room in our house, I don't want DH to throw out the frisbees, educational games, and unopened packages of tennis balls. One person's trash is another one's treasure.

I freecycle stuff that I don't really need and is too "good" to throw away. Makes me feel good that I am heping others.

Augusta, GA(Zone 8a)

Hi you all, speeking of freesycle, I used to donate a lots of things to different people . Once I had some stuff and this woman came to pick it up. I happened to ask her if she knew someone who can put my new clothes closet together that I have received in a box. She said that she can do it. she looked like she know what to do, it took her 5 hours to do it. In the mean time her phone rang every 1/2 hour, and she was cussing her kids out, and telling them that they just have to go to bed without her, because she is doing someting good for a lady. I felt bad, but she kept on talking to me, said her brothers were in jail, to make it short, she stayed in my house till 3 in the morning, I could hardly get rid of her. She could have been a ax murderer of something. Now I give my things to Catholic SS. Etelka

Useful ideas. We are giving lots of stuff away to people we know, and if the pile gets large enough, we post in Craigs list under "free."

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I donate clothes, toys, small furniture, books, videos, etc., to the Vietnam Vets. They come and pick up and leave a receipt.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

My son recently donated a little old wooden chair to Habitat and a few days later they saw the chair in an antique store for $65. It was not an antique at all but an old inexpensive kitchen chair from the 50's that had belonged to his girlfriend's parents.

Wow kiseta- a little scary.

My DH went to pick up some drainage pipe, free, off craigslist. The guy lived in a quite nice neighborhood. Mark did not see the pipe at first, and called. The guy stayed inside the house and told him where to find it. Seemed a bit weird at the time,, but maybe the guy was visited by that woman in the past. Otherwise, all our craigslist transactions have been fine and productive. Great to be able to not throw things in the dump!!!! We doante to Salvation Army when possible, Goodwill when that is more convenient.

I'd love to know though, why it is so profitable that they even send trucks around and practically beg you for stuff. Just because there is no cost for inventory? Some of the charities even post things on eBay.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I've used the vietnam vet group for donations and it went smoothly. A different charity left a huge number of toys uncovered when they looked and decided they didn't have room in their truck, and then it rained on everything. Not giving to them again.

Thomaston, CT

There is a local charity in the city nearby, & I donate to them....they run a shelter & a soup kitchen.....Etelka, that was a scary thing to have happened!

LOL... that little chair from the 50's was an antique! Really.... you just did not realize it. We have 3 little plain stools from my grandmothers that look like any other plain stool. Someone at one of my mothers parties years ago saw one of them and offered her $200 on the spot for the one stool... they would have died if they knew there were 2 more of them in other bathrooms! We just thought of them as little stools ... nothing of real interest.

I can imagine getting overwhelmed by it all, too, and I would have a hard time letting go of a lot of my things. I have to admit that I could be a borderline hoarder.

I'm a Freecycler, too. I have gotten rid of many things that are still good, but that I no longer want or need. I have gotten rid of many excess plants that way. Every year I advertise in Freecycle to have people come and dig plants from my gardens. I also donate stuff to Savers.

Etelka, that was a bad experience. Wow! I bet you could have gotten it done in half the time, and with a lot less aggravation.

Adesia, I have seen many old items from the 50s in antique stores. They're collectors items now, as are things from the 60s, 70s and 80s, too. I've seen so many items from those eras in the antique shops around here, and I always drool over them, but can't afford them.

They had closed our bank branch(I loved it it was an older building and people so friendly) the next closest is in an open air mall, which I totally want to stay away from the next couple of days, so I had to go to another one, they are still closed because of damage from Sandy

South Hamilton, MA

We forget how much there is to clean up besides people's homes.

Thomaston, CT

Slow going, too!

Even though most people have gotten back into their everyday life people that were flooded are still dealing with the problems

Just reading a discussion on FB with 1 of my friends from my hometown
to avoid having to pay thousands!!! of $ in flood insurance ever year(mind you they have NEVER been flooded before) what's the point of all the years paying into insurance and never using it, but you get flooded once and geez.....

They have to raise their house 14' above sea level!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also remember they are NOT down the shore!!!!!!!!!!!
absolutely insane!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

that's horrible. and yeah what the he double toothpicks on paying so much in premiums, then have a problem, they jack up your rates. grrr.

Thomaston, CT

Insurance companies are awful.....just changed mine because of an awful rate hike....this one will probably go up next year!

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Erie Insurance seems to treat us OK. We have a local office owned by a decent guy. Combined home and cars.

It was a storm of historic proportions......I'm hoping never to see another one like that....but look what Colorado is going through......

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

I am in Colorado right now and have meetings in Longmont and Ft. Collins the next two days - should be interesting. had to route around some closed roads to get to my hotel this evening.

Yikes, stay safe Bill!

South Hamilton, MA

Good luck with safety on your trip.

Thomaston, CT

Not a great place to be right now....my art teacher was supposed to fly to Boulder on Sunday to visit friends....don't know if she ever left.......

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

no problems today - a couple of detours and two small companies where shut down because rugs needed to be removed

water has retreated although for those two companies the water had to have been 3-4' high to cause damage.

Thomaston, CT

It was a scary scene out there.......

South Hamilton, MA

We see the horrible photos on TV. So sorry for the people there.

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

Hope your trip goes safely, Bill!
