possibly Galium Sphinx (BedStraw Sphinx) green to more commonly brown or black-Highly variable. not for sure but the closest I cold find. Flapdoodle will probably know for sure
TY This summer I Had 2-4 of the Hummingbird Moth's here around my Butterfly Bushes so great I will go put this little guy right back out on the plant in witch i found him on :)))
Hyles gallii does appear most likely - http://bugguide.net/node/view/35158/bgimage, but some white-lined sphinx caterpillars can be quite dark as well - http://www.silkmoths.bizland.com/Hyleslineata5lblacktexas.jpg
thank you all for your info Now he is back on the plant he came from & hope he will Hybernate till spring :) today will be our last 708 weather
so i hope he can snuggle under the wood chips .
