Thanks for letting me know that they won't reseed, I will try chilling them as well, maybe some in the fridge, some in freezer. Else I'll be right beside you begging plants. Wonder if I am far enough north and west to get them to reseed?
October Blooms
If I were you ladies, I would scatter some seed outside and see what happens, but save some in case it doesn't work.
Wow, it doesn't get all that cold at my dau home either, but we do have cowpen daisies that found their way to the woods edges.
They are pretty tough and widespread, I think they might do ok with a little chill and dampness. It's worth a try.
You can put them in your fridge to get them cold for a few weeks and then plant them. Or, you can put them in the fridge, then do winter sowing in some milk jugs. Just keep them watered if it gets dry over the winter. I usually start my winter sowing in late Jan or very early Feb.
Oh Sheila, those are great pictures, I have a great time giving the tour also.
Thank you for posting and for joining the Master Naturalists you guys will have a lot of fun with this group.
Josephine.
Beautiful pictures and what a very special tour guide indeed!
Yes, we hated to see the classes end, but have made sure to keep in contact with some of the group.
That is great, I hope you guys will come and work at the wildscape when you can, I know you are already working at the library garden.
Very nice Cheryl.
It has been so windy here the last few days, that it blew a lot of my fall aster blooms away. My chrysanthemums are cranking up as my strawberry fields is beginning to produce some dried puffs. My zexmenia still looks good and my vinca and angelonia. My various lantanas are still going strong and my esperanza too. Mexican petunias, four oclocks, gingers still look good. Queen's Wreath appears to be seeding. Firespike still going strong and some parthenia still looks good. Ive pulled some of the parthenia already as it was going to seed. all my begonias and coleus are still looking good. My frost weed went to seed very quickly. It seemed to take forever to bloom and then it went to seed in two weeks. I'll put up pix tomorrow. Nights in the 40's last night and for the next 4 nights. I had to bring my caterpillar inside. I was afraid he would get too cold.
Marty did your caterpillar pupate?
What are those two plants on the left, Josephine?
Jo, my cat has made a little "house" out of leaves but he is still making frass and eating leaves. I guess he does it at night. When I check for him, he is in the little house.
Wow Marty, he sure is taking his time about pupating.
Jo I chose a tiny cat in the hopes that he had not been parasitized. I dont even know if that made sense. The frass is getting bigger. Here is a couple shots of his leaf house. It appears to be about 3 leaves glued together. One leaf has dried. I know you can tell much from the photo but I have a tiny vase holding bean leaves on stems in water.
That makes sense, I thought you kept the one you showed earlier. I guess we just wait and see.
Marty, I saw a caterpillar on your morning glory, can you tell what it is?
Wow Josephine! You're good! I had to take a second look at the pic to find it.
Unfortunately, it is a fall webworm. My neighbor has a mulberry sapling nearby that is full of webs.
Oh well, you can't win them all, or have every caterpillar be a butterfly.
Very nice Stephanie.
Stephanie, would you save me some seeds for the Texas Betony? If so would ;you please save them in the fridge? Ive looked it up and its even evergreen. It sounds like a great plant and it looks so pretty in your pix. Im really enjoying the Strawberry Fields you gave me in the Spring RU. Im just now starting to see some of the puffs go to seed. If I save the seed, will they come true next year?
Not sure I can save seeds on the Betony, but I'll try! I might have babies in the spring to share, too. The Strawberry Fields are very good at self-seeding and coming back true in my garden. I've never tried to grow directly from seed.
Thanks, Stephanie. Baby plants would be OK too. Whatever is easiest for you.
