I saw this bug in my garden, it was approx. 10cm long with a pointed rear end and raised his head slightly and appeared to have 2 eyes (unsure if just markings). The bug was black in colour.
It's on a leaf in the photo so that bit isn't part of him!

I am thinking from the time signature, somewhere in the UK.
Could be an elephant hawk moth larva - this appears to be the time of season for them...
