I found this on one of my salvias. Is anyone familiar with this?

Any chance we can get a closer pic?

I took 2 pictures as close as I could focus with this camera. Any closer and the pictures get blurry.

Looks more like a cocoon than an egg case, but other than that....

well helena, i've never seen Flapdoodle stumped before...if he doesn't know, probably no one else does either. what you can try, if the white maybe a cocoon is still there, is bring it into the house with the part of the plant it is attached to and see what if anything hatches out of it. then you will be able discover what it is and tell us. also make note of any changes it goes through. i am assuming it hasn't moved since you first photographed it? IDs are often fairly difficult without macro digital capacity.

Thanks, sorry for being stumped. If it's a cocoon we'll probably find out what it is. So far it hasn't changed any, I have it in the green house with a butterfly net over it . So if it comes out it will be trapped in there long enough for me to see what it is, I hope.

super!

Possibly Pyrausta inornatalis, it feeds on sages/salvias, makes a similar cocoon and is found across the south from Fla to Calif.

Thanks for the ID, hopefully that what it is. I'm still waiting for that salvia to bloom though but I have plenty of other salvias too.

I felt the cocoon yesterday before changing to a different net and it was very soft to the touch.

There are a variety of Pyrausta in our general area, so could be a different species in that genus. The proof is in the cocoon....grin
