I'm wondering what kind of caterpillar this is on my Parrotia persica. Thanks for any help.

I think it is more likely that this is the American Dagger Moth (Acronicta americana).

I found this moth exactly where the catterpillar had been. The catterpillar was much larger than this moth so I wasn't thinking they represent the same creature, but is there any connection? The picture is not great, I could try to get a better one tomorrow.Thanks.

It's a treehopper/planthooper (superfamily Fulgoroidea), not a leafhopper, and as it is a sap sucker, it would not be responsible for the leaf damage shown.
