What is the kind of bush/tree (conifer?) that is often seen planted around tuscan style buildings? It is tall and very slim.

Tuscany type conifer?
Possibly a Juniperus of some kind.
I suspect you're referring to cupressus sempervirens.
It has a very striking mediterranean look to it.
Unfortunately, not very hardy.
Yes, the Italian Cypress - as Weerobin noted - is the tall slender conifer often used to demark drives in Tuscany.
Cupressus sempervirens: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/53329/
Not stout enough for midwest conditions, but likely fine for most parts of droughty Texas.
Wonderful! Italian Cypress it is. Thanks to all.

You could substitute Juniperus scopulorum 'Skyrocket'
I have a lovely Juniperus scopulorum 'Moonglow' that really stands out. It's a great blue/gray.
