Portlandia, Cubanola & Juanulloa

Sarasota, FL(Zone 9b)

David, I use containers for a lot of my treasures as well. I move them around so I can enjoy them when they are in bloom and some I sink into the ground for insulation, but the pots help keep the oak tree roots from invading and robbing the plants of nutrients. Begonias love this treatment and do great under my big oaks now. My brugs also turn out to be nematode magnets, so they have to stay in big pots.

Did you mention somewhere in this thread that you had seedlings of the Cubanola? I would love to have a plant of that one, and have never seen them for sale here. If you are willing to part with one D-mail me please?

Yes. I know what you mean. I have a few exotic plants myself. All in pots.

I gave away 3 pick up loads of "cranky" plants when I moved to Chicago last year, now that I moved back I don't have much to put in my green house any more..bright side it will be less plants this winter. I will miss sitting in there amongst the plants when it gets cold as I use to when I had winter blues plant withdrawal syndrome lol.

Lakeland, FL(Zone 10a)

Boy I would have loved to have gotten your cranky plants RJ

I really had to "detatch" to let them go!

rjuddharrison ~ understatement I am sure!!

Very happy here. Managed to get Two Portlandia coccinea to go along with my grandiflora and alba. Next summer I can cross them and get the large pink flowered hybrid. Also got a bunch of Cubanola seeds to grow, plus some rare Medinilla seeds to sprout.

OK Dave give! Where did you get your beauties?

Lakeland, FL(Zone 10a)

Got them for a friend that got them from who knows where. Were not cheap, bit I like to have an extra just in case. One was even in flower.

Hey Popper, happy spring! I've been making up for all that cold. Repotted scrappy and seems to be doing well for now. It did pretty good in green house and is now sporting new growth. Re-reading thread, was foliar fertilizing a concensus? Seemed like it might have been for something else.

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Well, RJ - I haven't learned the 'detach' thing yet - I am digging every tropical, potting it up and moving it to KCMO with me. My sons 'said' they would build me a greenhouse, but if they don't, in the house they go - all 250 of them!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Hope they build one! They will after the first 2 times do hauling plants in and out!

Lee's Summit, MO(Zone 6a)

Yep - that's what I'm thinking - LOL - they all three know how important my plants/sanity are!

I am a chick with a lot of tools so I built my own hot house. You may have a lot of fun putting yours together yourself could also be a family project. After going through 4 of the racks with the plastic zip cover I just needed something a lot more weather resistant. I made the plains myself as I wanted it to give a little when it got windy here and I wanted a arched dome. Plus I did not want to spend a ton of $$ on it. It was a fun project. Here is a picture of it and some bromeliads and plumerias going inside.

I had such a mild winter here in central Florida (sorry all you northeners) that my Bueamontias (didn't grow up the trunk, grew up and grabbed the lower branches) and Thunbergia mysorensis managed to grow all winter and are 20+ feet up into a Camphor tree (yucky tree). Don't see any buds on the Beaumontia yet. :'( but there are long strands of T mysorensis beginning to grow down, getting ready to flower. Going to look so nice when they start to bloom. I'll send a pic when they start flowering.

Hi guys..David or anyone, what are the natural pollinators for Cubanola? I am doing it with a paint brush at the moment as nothing seems to be interested in it.
Osmocote seems to have cleared up the scraggly condition I talked about before. Having the best blooms this season.
Thx,
Rj
Oh my! Long time haven't been here, I can upload from phone! Happy dance.
Well, doesn't seem to want to put photo upright

I would guess moths of some kind. Being white and fragrant at night usually means moths. i guess it could be a bat, but that really a flower shaped for bats. I do know RJ that they can be hand pollinated but the success rare is not the best.

Hope all is well RJ, drop me a d-mail and fill me in on what's going on.

You KNOW I need to adopt some cool plants - I had to leave so many of my not-so-common plants behind.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

KayJones ((((HUGS)))) We will get your collection back..

Lakeland, FL(Zone 10a)

RJ- No, just get lost, if I don't they always split and I loose the seeds.
As soon as the pod matures they will grow. As for how long to mature, can be awhile if cool

David
