Long Island, New York. Found it dead while swimming in my pool. Never seen anything approaching that size around here in terms of fly-like insects. Thinking it was some sort of giant hornet/wasp? Roughly 2.5 inches long.
Any idea would be great.

Looks like some kind of cicada but none I've seen here.
Dog-day cicada in genus Tibicen.
