large "screaming" black beetle

Found this big black beetle near our kids garden. The kids touched it and it "screamed" at them! It is big and ugly... It is not a roach or a cicada. Any ideas? It's just hanging out on the shed...

Don't know if you have them on the west coast, but here in the east we have Bess Beetles. They are big, black, shiny and they scold you loudly if you disturb them. See http://flickrhivemind.net/Tags/patentleatherbeetle/Interesting
