Do you recognize this spider? He looks like he's got a pretty big head, haha.
I live in San Diego, CA close to the beach. This spider appeared on my succulents and I noticed him right away because of his size. I almost thought it was fake because of how round its body was and how black it was! He was a slow mover but still has me on edge when I see the photos. I would say he was about 1 inch long?
I hope these photos help too--when I look at the photos he looks small but I remember him being a lot bigger than any of the other spider I see around here.. His head looked shiny/hard but lower portion of his body looked like it could have had some fur on it? When I took a photo of him with the flash you can kind of see the difference there.

Do you know what kind of spider this is?
Image not clear enough to be certain several possibilities including a ground spider - http://bugguide.net/node/view/293408 and an introduced species - http://www.ozanimals.com/image/albums/australia/Spider/S00740.jpg
None of these are dangerous.
