CLOSED: Hornets/Yellowjackets

East Bridgewater, MA

This nest underneath my pool in Massachusetts doesn't look like the yellow jacket nests I usually see which are flimsy and honeycomb-like with only maybe ten or so insects on them. Those nests are oftentimes in shutters or hanging on my garage door. This nest was much bigger, sturdier, had an actual inside to it, and the yellowjackets themselves seem a bit smaller and more "bee" like. It also was more menacing in its overall feel.

What do I have here? And what are the other more common yellowjackets that I described?

Thanks!

The insects you show here look like Eastern Yellowjackets to me. The non-underground nest is atypical but not unheard of, even though it looks much like a hornets nest. The other nesting insect you describe sound like paper wasps, they have yellow stripes too.

Thanks. After Googling it You nailed the Paper Wasps call too. I always thought they were Yeloowjackets.

Could anyone explain the general differences between Wasps, Yellowjackets, and Hornets? I've been wondering that since I was a kid.

A hornet is a wasp, but not all wasps are hornets. Here is a bit of info that might help. This is in the simplest terms even I could understand it. ^_^
