How do you stand it Lisa - is it because you are used to it. God keep you and the others safe.

Middlesbrough, United Kingdom

Look after yourself, Lisa. I hope it soon blows over.

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

Looks like I will be fine, the worst has gone right above us and I think Grits' hometown got the rain. We didn't get any at all, just high winds and they have died down. Missed it one more time (letting out a deap sigh of relief) Lisa

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

Bless your heart. Where is Grits? Is she on here somewhere? Hope she's OK!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I'm so glad to hear it passed you by.....hope everybody down that way is okay, too!

Now, keep us in your thoughts and prayers - they're actually calling for SNOW by Sunday night here in middle Tennessee. I know you guys up North are probably saying "what's the big deal?"....but it was in the 50s at 5 this morning, and it's been really balmy. Wahhhhhhh!!!!

I wouldn't mind getting snow. They're calling for it here in the Knoxville area also. We probably won't see much - I'll be very surprised if we get more than an inch.

It's too bad, too, because my pear trees already have leaves, daffodils are in full bloom, lettuce in the garden, peas are up, etc etc etc.

Lisa - I was watching the weather channel and saw that come through. It should be disappated by the time it reaches Atlanta, but they said the dopler saw a tornado in Mississippi. Tornadoes is the prime reason why we left the Dallas area. I hate severe weather.

I'm glad you got through it okay!

Brewers, KY(Zone 6b)

We never used to have such severe weather like we have been having for the past couple of years. We are so lucky because only one tornado hit last year out of all the warnings. Down here we have no basements to retreat to. The water table is so high that basements are not even thought of here! Heck, we even have to bury our dead on top of the ground, they would pop right out the ground if we dug to deep! LOL! wait thats not funny...Lisa

Funny you mention this. Last night I was up late watching TV and saw on the Discovery channel a documentary about the methods of burying the dead in New Orleans. They showed the above ground crypts.

I got scared with all the talk of spirits and stuff, so I changed channels. And today Lisa mentions it!! Ironically funny.

ooooh-wierd! At least you know I'm telling the truth! (No spirits though) LOL! Lisa

Indeed! Those crypts looked really scary. I think I would want them to ship me elsewhere for burial...

What a macabre subject! A thread started with tornadoes and ended with death. Let's change the subject to something else.

Late last week I was expecting Trish to come back home from NE TN at any minute, so I went outside and cut 10 daffodills that were ready to bloom. Put in a vase with water, they were blooming the next morning!! :)

We made it!! No major problems. We had almost 4 inches of rain. The old bayou is full.
The worst was north of us. Grits probably got more rain than we did.
Can you believe only a few months ago we were actually crying for this?
The weather people are predicting temperatures near freezing for Monday and Tuesday . I have some help coming Sunday to get everything covered up or put the sprinklers on. We have snap beans and squash up along with sunflowers, zinnias and cornflowers. The zinnias took a beating in the rain and most are stuck to the mud.

rotflmho! Put some coats on those little plants I've sent you! If it snows they'll not know what to do! They left here and it was 80*, Lisa
BUD***you and I were posting at the same time :-) the above was the answer to Dave's posting.. For you: I can't believe we didn't get any rain! Just a few sprinkles and that was all! I hope you can manage to get your plants all covered. The temps here will be in the high 30 (around 38-39) on Monday and Tuesday. Lisa

Here's what the NWS has to say for my weekend outlook:

"A CHANGE OVER FROM RAIN TO SNOW IS EXPECTED ACROSS
SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA AND NORTHEAST TENNESSEE SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. SOME ACCUMULATIONS ARE POSSIBLE..."

I'll cover the plants with a thick layer of straw!

Glen Arm, MD(Zone 7a)

They are calling for 10-20" of snow Sunday into Tuesday here in Maryland.Good thing I didn't take the plow off the tractor.

Troy, VA(Zone 7a)

What a shame. Thought we had seen the end of it. Poor plants and animals just don't know what to make of it.

(Zone 6a)

Dave put some blue or red food coloring in the water with the dafs...

the kids love it

chris - thanks I'll try that next time!

Glad to hear you're fine Lisa. Our weather here is atrocious too. We've had snow tho' last night was just a hard frost. Further north of me they've got it bad. In the Borders and Scotland it's affected the power supplies. There's been helicopters out dropping supplies. It's been a very odd winter. The middle of February felt like April. Now we're back to January again!!! I'm busy making up little pots with seeds in them. Hope this doesn't go on for much longer. I've beds I'm wanting to dig. And I've got summer-flowering bulbs on mail-order too. Some nerines arrived yesterday. Couldn't get them in the garden so I just had to pot them up and pop em in the kitchen next to my seeds. They'll be nice and snug in there for a few days...

Pineville, LA(Zone 8b)

Yep, we got all the rain meant for South of us - it's amazing that just last Aug we would have given an arm and a leg for it (just an expression), lol.

Bud - off thread probably, but all your plants gave me cause to gasp, goodness, wish I lived near you. Would hire out for plants, lol.

Are you planting the Profusion zinnias???? I've ordered some seed. I'm fascinated by them - they really look great at the edge of a border.

Blessings,
Grits

Hello Grits!! We've got the sun out now so going to go for a walk. Think I need to pick up some more pots. Another friend sent me seeds this morning. This is what a friend called Mary sent me:

Geraniuim pratense
Papaver orientale
Penstemon serulatees
Tetragonolobus maritimus
Lupinus arboreus (Tree Lupin)
Geranium platyanthum
Digitalis
Dianthus anatolicus hyb
Agastache foeniculum
Lupinus polyphyllus
Gaillardia
Echinacea
Campanula latifolia
Hebe franciscana
Heuchera cylindrica
Campanula mixed
Salvia forskaohhlei
Helianthus
Polemoneum caeruleum

I think Mary must have a very lovely garden. She lives in Ireland. What a generous person. Most of my plants died out when I was ill a couple of years ago. Very upsetting. And in spite of England being the home of rose gardens and cottage gardens I found it impossible to get anyone decent to look after it for me while i was ill. I had to go through the awful upset of seeing cowboys in it. I've found someone for this year who'll keep the lawn mowed for me. The rest of it I'm doing myself again.

Yes i've got some Zinnias. They're Persian Carpet mixed. Don't know what they're like. Going to get them started this weekend.

Well I'd better get myself out while the sun's still out and bright. Gotta get more pots!!!

West Simsbury, CT(Zone 5a)

Here too! A huge nor'easter heading our way! The weatherman says the worst in 50 years. BIG siggggggggggh. Snow starting Sunday evening the ending sometime on Tuesday. Lots of wind too. I'm NEVER going to see my gardens or the golf course, am I???

New Paris, OH

A few weeks ago I watched a nat'l geographic show on "the Storm of The Century" that hit the east coast, I believe in '95. At any rate, they made much of the kind of weather pattern one needs for such a storm and right now it is a classic set up to a very very bad storm. Stay away from the east coastal ways as there will be storm surge from this one.

ohio: I saved the newspaper from the day that 1995 storm hit. I was looking through my old collection the other day and came across it. The headline was: "Snow this deep buries us all!". East TN got 51" of snow during that blizzard.
