I think I found my answer by googling - 'fraid they're squash bug eggs - I best be getting back out to the garden ASAP and look for more so can remove!

I am absolutly bugged by these bugs. i got so fed up with them one time this year i got the 5% Sevin out on them...........shortly later I put the container back in the garage where it belongs..........never again to be brought out again in anger.

Problem I encountered with 5% sevin is that next day the worms in that square foot garden went belly up and lied on top of the soil. My plants enjoyed their company and they ceased to function as their helpmates when they were dead and drawing flies. Cucmber beetles came back about a week later after one of our rare rain events in North Central Arkansas.
