My son visited a beach near Brooklyn, NY and said hundreds of these beetles were flying everywhere. They resemble Japanese beetles, but were about twice as long (one inch). The Japanese beetles that I've seen are only about 1/2" in length. Do they vary that much in size depending on location or food sources? If not, is this some other type of beetle?

Thank you. I had thought fig beetle, too, but the color was all wrong. The dead beetle's color had probably faded, and that threw me off. I should have known better. Thanks again, Flap.
