CLOSED: Large "Bumblebee"

Aurora, CO(Zone 4a)

Every summer, we see this very large bee hovering in our garden. He's shy, and never hangs around for long enough that I have time to run in the house and fetch my camera. I use a long lens, as I'm too much of a sissy to get very close to him. Today there were two of them, and they allowed me to get a few shots. We've been calling him Grand Master Bee, and I was quite happy to finally get some photos. Can someone tell us what type of bee this is?

This looks like Bombus ternarius, known as the tri-colored bumble bee - http://www.cirrusimage.com/Hymenoptera_bumble_bee_tricolored.htm
However, there are are least a couple of other species that can have a somewhat similar color pattern. Bumble bees generally are quite gentle and will not sting unless severely provoked.

Thank you! I write a blog, and want to be as accurate as possible with my descriptions. We have ground bees as well, and several years ago, your forum helped me identify them. Your help is appreciated.
