How I spent my evening...

Arlington, TX

5 orphaned skunks! Too painful to have animal control kill them but I did find a lady who rehaps them right around the block from me (almost). I have caught 3 and have two more to go. First 2 were already delivered. Wish me luck. So cute but good god my nose is tingling from baby skunk spray!

Too cute!! Good luck!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Awww! How sweet of you to rescue them!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, they sure are cute, I am glad I have never had to deal with skunks.

Arlington, TX

I still smell like skunk after a bath and shower...

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

You were very brave to handle them yourself Cheryl, I don't know if I could have done it.

Fulshear, TX(Zone 9b)

I've never tried it but I've heard tomato juice will get the smell off of you.

Arlington, TX

I haven't tried it. I will just have to wear it off.

Houston Heights, TX(Zone 9a)

what happened to their mom?

Iowa Park, TX(Zone 7b)

They say a mix of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide will take the smell out but I've never had to try it.

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Yeah, I've heard the tomato juice thing too. Does baby skunk smell different than adult skunk? Kudos on your bravery!

Arlington, TX

Mom was the victom of animal control. She sprayed my dog twice and my husband once. I did not know she had a litter.

Oh my, so did you catch this one too.

Arlington, TX

There are 4 in that picture and I could only manage to grab 1.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Depends on your sensitivity to the smell, stay back when tail goes up, feeding them is a definite alternative to losing a garden, have often wondered who was making a joke abt tomato juice cutting smell- I personally don't think it does a bit of good. Can you not borrow a live trap to feed them in? Then slam the door down? With something non absorbent tween you and them?

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Have-a-heart trap?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Chuckl, we have live traps in the feed stores that aren't hav a heart, but they both work, and the critters no doubt are starved enough to eat anything they can get to.

Arlington, TX

Spring trap. Doesn't hurt them.

Dallas, TX

Do they bite?

Arlington, TX

No biting yet. I played with them at the wildlife ladies house after she had bathed them and they had calmed down. At this age they are pretty needy and friendly. None have sprayed at her place but the larger ones sprayed me while I was attempting to capture them.

Almost anything critter is cute when it is tiny. How sweet!

I'm curious what will be done with them when they are raised?

Released on some property far from human development.

Magnolia, TX(Zone 9a)

Sounds like most of Kansas where they are thick as bugs in Texas, chuckl

Early this spring, we had a migration of skunks come through our woods.

Our neighbor saw them on his way out the door to work around 5:30 am. I woke to our dogs barking and when I walked out on the porch, I could smell them.

One did stay and I had the adrenaline rush of having her chase Pod down the driveway straight toward me. He ran past me and she thankfully veered off into the woods and to her den. Haven't seen her since but we catch whiffs of her now & again.

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Way to go, Cheryl!! They may be stinky but, oh my, are they cute!

Carla

Woods are fine, under the house has to go.

Alba, TX(Zone 8a)

I do baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and Dawn dishwashing detergent mixed in one gallon of water. Our skunk seeking Shepherd says the Dawn is the key to this formula!

Cute babies, but from a distance!

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Is it something to do with the ratio of eye size to head size to body size? Position of eyes? Universal symbol of "I'm a baby, gotta love me." Disney knew all about it. Maybelline too. The real thing is away cuter, though.

Mother raised a baby in the house for three years , intact . It never sprayed but once , and that was because the shades fell on the window when it tried to climb them .Stinky would turn around and raise his tail like he was going to spray , but never did .He did have a musty odor , but dogs do too .

Arlington, TX

My dogs don't smell like a skunk! Their pee and feces stink. But the little ones are pretty adorable.

Dahlonega, GA

Sorry , didn't mean to convey they smelled like skunk . Dogs do have an odor however ,and baths , perfume keeps it at bay for awhile .Bad tarter on teeth is a big culprit , but can eliminate that with a visit to the vet , and insure healthy gums that don't get infected , causing futher odor. I have two house dogs left out of seven I had at one time . Old age and health has taken it's toll . After 68 years of pets , it's time I don't take any more . They would outlive me now .
I had to take my precious Pepper for his last trip to the vet just 10 days ago , leaveing me one old dog who's days are numbered and a westie that keeps me a bit younger than my 74 (coming up ) years .
Like to add, the leash was until I could trust him not to run in the road when a car passed .

What a sweetie, Digger!

Dahlonega, GA

Thank you , he came as a five year old rescue . We had him another delightful five years and he loved children, fighting to get to them and lots of face kisses .
Stinky , the skunk gave Mother's family a lot of laughs and entertainment . He should have been in the wild instead of keeping him for a pet . I was too young to know about rehabbing him at the time . Mom lived in the city and I was in the country . Would have been simple for me to take him , but we didn't know any better. They are so sweet and cuddly when they are babies . When he had his first winter , he went into semi hibernation , in the warm house . He tunneled under the covers in a spare bedroom and came out every few weeks to say "Hello" , then back to bed . Mother was shocked to find out he had dug down in the mattress destroying it .
When he was four , Mothers uncle took him to his farm , where Stinky was given a box outside to sleep in . he slept during the day and came out at night to hunt bugs and eat his dog food . After about a month , he stopped coming home to sleep and disappeared into what we hoped was the local skunk population . Just hope he didn't run across another farmer and try to get friendly by rearing up on his leg for a treat .We lost track of him after that
Looks like you're a softy like me when it comes to giving a helpless animal a chance at life , Newtons. It's a good feeling

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Digger, so sorry to hear about your Pepper (what a cute!). Please don't stop taking in dogs. If you don't feel comfortable giving one a forever home, please consider being a foster parent.

Just yesterday I was working at the Molly Hollar wildscape here in Arlington and we found a pit bull puppy at the park.
He was totally starved and had a broken leg so we decided to take him to the animal shelter in the hope that he might be adopted.
When we got there the lady asked where we found him and we told her, she said that he was the seventh puppy from that litter that people had found at the same park and brought in.
Evidently they just dumped them over there, it was so sad, she said he couldn't be saved and all of us were crying for the poor puppy.
Some people are so cruel, they could have brought the puppies to the shelter to be adopted, instead they dumped them.
So sad.

Arlington, TX

Too many puppies beging born is the real issue. Why do people not spay or neuter their animals so they wont end up with babies that have to be euthenized. That is sad Josephine and illegal.
C

Milton, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, you guys are so right! I grew up on Bob Barker saying "spay or neuter your pets" after every show....who could disobey? That is awful, Josephine. Booo hooo. I don't even like dogs, but still, that story makes me feel sick. (My daughter is deathly allergic--we were just talking today about how she should have an Epi-pen in case she forgets her spray and gets stuck somewhere, like on a plane with a dog in a pet carrier.)

Dahlonega, GA

Loonie1, I was with the humane (No kill ) shelter for several years and fostered dogs . 83 adopted between the last of Feb . 'till first part of Nov . All of them I fostered myself .We leave each fall and return home in April . It got to the point that I had to transport several dogs with me to Texas because no one could take in more dogs . I ended up keeping several over time that were unadoptable because of shyness , snappers , immune issues etc . Needless to say , it became a problem at home . I will take in a needy dog now but find it a home ASAP .
Check out my thread "How inhumane and cruel " back in April of 2011. In the pet forum , I think .I just checked and the last post was August 19.Happy ending and an awsome dog .

I don't know about getting the skunk smell off a person but a sure way to get it out of your house or other building is to roll up newspaper, light it then blow it out and let it smoulder a bit and take it around the house... it will definitley get the smell out. A huge den od skunks was torn up near our home in New Mexico and over 100 skunks were displaced.. they moved into and around everyones homes... we all learned how to 'get the smell out'!.
