found outside on my house in Portland Or. If it's a kind of crane fly, will it destroy my lawn, or does it eat mosquitoes-friend or foe?

Having said that, I think I have identified your crane fly. It looks to me like the Giant Western Crane Fly - Holorusia hespera: http://bugguide.net/node/view/40968/bgimage

This species was not present in Bug Files, so I have added a page for it. It would be great if you would add your images to that page: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/6893/

I don't know much about them as pests. This Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly reports that some crane flies have larvae (leatherjackets) that can cause damage to lawns by feeding on the roots of grass plants. They also report that the adults of some species feed on mosquitos, so they ma7y be both pests and beneficial!
