I live in a suburb of Chicago and have never seen anything like this. (Probably because I try to avoid creepy stuff, in general.) It's a spider on my fence wrapped in a web-like cup. Did he get trapped? Did he make the cup himself (or herself) for some reason? The macabre in me really wants to know. Thanks!
P.S. The spider inside the cup was moving, if that helps.
The spider constructed this herself. Inside you will find not only the spider, but her egg sac. Eventually, hatchlings will emerge, if they don't fall victim to a predator or parasitoid.
