Boonies, SD(Zone 4b)

Does anyone know where I can get some Red Wrigglers. I would like to do some composting inside this winter and have no idea where to get them. Can anyone give me any information?
Thanks

According to the website where I found these sources, they recommend the Composting Council's National Backyard Composting Program manual, which has more sources.

Hope this helps!

The way your weather sounds you may have frozen wigglers if you mail order them.

I was watching a program on t.v. yesterday and they were telling how to compost with red wigglers but didn't tell where to get them. I buy them at local bait shop here for fishing. Jim

Wow, you guys are the best!! Thanks a lot for all the information. I need to get some compost started but I usually bag up the leaves and leave them over the winter and they do ok, but I need something to do with the kitchen scraps over the winter. You are right, if I don't put the worms in the right spot, they might be wormsickles. Even my pantry gets really cold when the northwest wind is at -25 wind chill.
Thanks again!

I tried the worm composting thing last winter. I sent them like $175 for the worms(you get 2000) that" s 2 thousand~
They are babies, in a box. ANd then, they give you this solid brick of shedded coconut, ou put that in a bauckt of water...till is all is absorbed. WEll, you are given these 3 trays. Sorta looks like a steel drum set all stacked on top of eachother. Do you follow ? Well, You have to feed the suckers lettuce and scraps like that there. And you have to lift off the trays, and well, they don;t tell you how heavy they are. ANd they also don;t tell you that if it rains...and its humid. the worms come out the holes in the tray and they get everywhere. DID YOU EVERY TRY TO TEACH A WORM A TRICK???? Take it from one who has BEEN THERE DONE THAT>>>>> Think VERY long and hard about it before you go for it now,.Maybe you;ll be one of the lucky ones. OR>>>> Maybe you'll be like me, What ever you do. don;t tell anyone what you are doing , because they laugh at you. Even a year later , they are still laughing....hay Mimi. You are doing WHAT??? Worms??? I thought I would have the best garden....with the "worm tea" that you hear about. HUM>>>Just think very long and hard about it. I;m not saying don;t do it. Everyone walks to a different drum. Lets just say...after 72 hours., I had had my fill and I was out $75. Plus I had 2,000 worms n my hands that I set free in my back yard.

well mingsmimi at least you struck another blow for the liberty of the red wriggler nation!

Newark, OH(Zone 5b)

And at least the wrigglers are doing their thing in your soil (or at least feeding the birds)! ;o) Hey, I can't even manage to get a good compost pile going - I'm not going to try worms!!

Bonifay, FL(Zone 8a)

Ruth don't give up on the red worms as they can be raised in a 10 gallon plastic tub w/cover. Best place to get them (after it warms up) is at a rabbit raiser. There should be some near you. A good fork of the dropings should be full of red worms (they help to keep the flys down by working up the pile )just don't over feed them.

Okay, whats the benefit of worm castings over say bat guano, horse manure, etc? Thinking of getting a 10 gallon plastic tub with cover...would love to make my own fertilzer...of course I do have a small compost pile...Is there anything one shouldn't feed these crawlers or a minimum temp requirement? Living in Florida we don't have many days of freezing temperatures and the ground rarely if ever freezes long enough for the snow to stick if we get any at all.

if you write in the word "worm farm" (under search). things like" happy D ranch "and things like that will come up/ They
will give you alot of info.

If you go to the Garden Watchdog and browse the category Composting and Vermiculture you'll find several companies listed there. No I'm not casting (groan) about for ratings, just letting you know that I did add some vermiculture companies since they are an aspect of gardening. Happy hunting!

Croton-on-Hudson, NY(Zone 6b)

We bought ours on ebay - I think it was from Acme Worm Farm. They were very healthy and we have been composting our garbage for almost 4 years. We dry the compost in the winter and give the excess tea to our house plants. In the summer we use the compost in the gardens. It is great for flower and vegetable gardens. We think the results are better than the composted manure we used to use.
