Found several of these about one inch below the lawn surface. They are around 3/4 inch long and distinctivly bulbous.

Thanks Flapdoodle, the photo in your link sure looks like it. I suspected that they might be cicada nymphs due to some similarity to the larger, mature nymphs that emerge and become adults. Pretty weird looking.
