I agree, some species of click beetle. When I was a child it was fun to put on their back and see them "click" and pop up in the air.

A click beetle, wow. Thank you, greenthumb99 and purpleinopp. I've enjoyed reading about these fellows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Click_beetle) and learning about their "click" mechanism which bounces them into the air. How cool!

Oh my gosh, that would freak me out hearing a 'click' in the night and not knowing what it was! I've never actually heard one. By the time they show up on my floor, they are usually dead or dying. : (
