Most dead twig mimics are in family Geometridae - http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/140305130 - but they usually are much smaller than yours.

Thankyou flapdoodle, it does look very similar, I would like to post a pic direct from my phone, however it doesn't seem to work.
Its attached to a clematis and was wondering if it's likely to stay on the plant, will it form a crystallis and what form of moth will it take
