What is this? I'm out all of the time but I've never seen one of these before. It appears to be some kind of mushroom or puffball. There was a group of about five of them and they were about 3 inches in diameter. They were growing in an oak woodland, Santa Monica Mountains (Los Angeles County).
Any Idea What This Is?
It appears to be the puffball Calbovista subsculpta.
Kelli - are you sure it's not an alien lifeform? Or maybe a misplaced marshmallow that has been pecked by birds? I have found many unusual fungi lifeforms in my garden, some of the most interesting have come in on free county mulch wood chips. This one is a new one to me.
It was a new one for me, too.
Cool!!
