I am still looking for the big black ants that have been reported in the same area to see if they are Carpenter - and found this guy. He is one of the big type ants on the East Coast. Sorry picture is blurry. Trying to add a third picture, but not allowing me to....

If the top surface of its thorax appears smooth from a side view, it likely would be a carpenter ant - http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/TOOLS/ANTKEY/carpid.html
