Just got 2 fruit trees from Gurney's. One = what I ordered, one is a lower quality susbtitute. No response for my request for a refund yet. They included a package of Boron, to be applied when planting. Also a package of Calcium for 2 weeks later. I have never run into either of these 2 chemicals mentioned for trees before. Any thoughts?
Boron and Calcium ?
I'd skip the boron unless you've tested your soil and know it's deficient...plants do need boron, but too much can be toxic and it's a pretty fine line between enough & too much so you really ought to know how much is in your soil already before you go adding more.
Here's an article on calcium and plants that you may find interesting: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1940/#b You don't have to worry about plant toxicity with it, but as the article points out not all calcium sources are created equal, and the stuff they gave you may not be in a form that plants can readily use.
Thanks kind of what I was thinking. At this point I am not feeling good about Gurney's.
They don't have the most stellar ratings on Garden Watchdog...plenty of positives but plenty of negatives too, to the extent that I would definitely think twice about ordering from them. I don't know what sort of fruit trees you ordered, but I think there's a good chance you could find someplace with a better Watchdog rating to buy them from. It looks like Gurney's pays attention to reviews on Watchdog, so you might try posting your experience there, that may help encourage them to make things right on the incorrect plant they sent you. http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/184/
Alderman Plum trees. Had trouble finding them anywhere. Thanks, I did not know about Garden Watchdog.
