I'm having some trouble identifying this butterfly. It appears to belong to the genus Phyciodes and the closest species I can find is ptolyca (the Black Crescent) but I'm just not certain. I have only one photo to check it against which is in a book and not on the internet. The location is Colima, Mexico. Also, it grew up on a Ruellia (Acanthaceae is the family). Any ideas? I also have photos of the caterpillar and chrysalis.
CLOSED: Butterfly ID?
It may be in the genus Anthanassa instead - http://butterfliesofamerica.com/anthanassa_tulcis.htm
Thank you Flap. It does appear to be Anthanassa tulcis. I reviewed several sites, descriptions, and photos in addition to the BOA offerings. It also appears to be a female. Now i am going to look up the spectacular crab spider...what a looker!
