We do our mulch dispersing together, also, Gracye. We stopped yesterday because we ran out of "weed mat" in the rose garden. We only mulch 3 areas because the other gardens I try to fill with as many perennials (and some annuals) as I can to crowd out weeds. It's raining today so the tarp will stay on the remainder of the mulch until it stops. Very happy to finally the wet stuff.
Favorite Mulch?
We will get a trailer full too. I have several new areas to mulch this year. We added a row of Nandinas last year and the row of box woods by the Veggie garden needs serious mulching.
Do you put down weed mat before you mulch?
We paid $15 a yard, that was contractor rate and used about 15 yards this year mulching the berm and newly edged all over the back fence line...we used newpaper, cardboard and when I ran out of that hubby started using the weed block(which I really don't like cause it never works, the weeds just grow right thru it)
We made a new berm a few years ago using corrugate and newspaper. It held the weeds down for a while. Nothing stops this crazy kind of grass with runners from growing on top of the mulch!! We put down black plastic and rock on the side of the house. Somehow weeds grow on top of that too. Weeds also grow between the pavers in front that have hardly a scrap of anything to feed them. The only thing that has held them somewhat at bay is the Black Scallop Ajuga which is much more easily controlled than the weeds.
ooo that black plastic is evil!!! the former owners used that in all the beds adjacent to the house, I wanted to really hurt them everytime I went to plant something!!!!
We only used it on the beds that got bushes and no room for anything else.
Use some black plastic around a melon or two,not really my favorite either. Mostly I will put cardboard down on the surface, fiber bags filled with leaves, compost, as to what I have that is natural handy, and that seems to work well enough for me.Then cypress mulch or some decorative useful around the ornamentals or flowers in addition to that.
I put down cardboard, newspaper and magazines under most of the mulch. I have an old area under the Evergreen grouping that was done more than 25 years ago that has landscaping fabric under it. Quite a few years ago we re-did part of that area and I put down old carpet. Boy that was a real mess last year when I had to cut through it to plant some azaleas.
Just finished putting the 5 yards of mulch and weed mat. If weeds come thru this, I don't care............I'm done.
Sally, looks to me like "dog vomit slime mold"
Won't hurt anything but can be pulled up easily in chunks almost whole, if you can't stand the ugliness yuk factor. . Get it before new spores ripen and release to diminish current and future outbreaks...
OR you could totally dry out the mulched areas to prevent dvsm mychroriza from "blooming" until the next warm humid spell!
Hope you are enjoying your visit with Dad and family and that he is on the mend.

Yep that's what it looks like to me. I get a bit of it from time to time just scoop it up and dispose to keep it from returning.
