Chat... :(

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Hi! I just see that chat will be opened in 3 H 57 minutes. ... This is not fair. I will be sleeping then! Why could not europeans have their own chat - when they're awake!? Or in weekends .....

Just thought it would be nice.

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

Again I see:

The chatroom will be open in 7 hours and 3 minutes.

And the clokc is here 18:56! Great... I think I can't join to the chat ever.. Why can't there be 2 chats? during our daytime (eruope/asia/africa) and americans.. ??

evert,

You have missed conversations that occurred in the "Dave's Garden forum". This issue was raised, and we compromised by instituting a second chat that is in a time-frame more convenient for our friends in Europe and Asia.

The chats will occur on Thursday morning from 7:00am until 10:00am, EST. That is, I believe, 5 hours behind GMT, so probably around 1pm till 4pm your time?

Oh...

I live in zone GMT +2.. so 7:00 there would be 14:00 pm.. yep.. BTW what does EST mean? Is it same as GMT or something your own one? Hey, does anyone know what is "pacifi daylight time" in GMT? What zone?

EST = Eastern Standard Time. That's what time it is in New York City (United States).

Here's a cool page with information about time zones: http://www.onlineconversion.com/timezone.htm

Evert, here's the rundown of US time zones:
EST = Eastern Standard Time
CST = Central Standard Time - one hour behind EST
MST = Mountain Standard Time - one hour behind CST
PST = Pacific Standard Time - one hour behind MST
Alaska is one hour behind PST
Hawaii is one hour behind Alaska

If you see "D" instead of "S" - EDT, it means Daylight Saving Time is in effect. This is where we set our clocks ahead one hour, starting the last Saturday in April and ending the last Saturday in October. Most states observe Daylight Saving Time, but a few don't.

I can't tell you offhand the number of hours from GMT to Easter Time US, but I'm sure there's a website somewhere that can tell you at a glance. Hope this helps!

it's about 5 or 6 hours. my cousin in Chicago is 6 hours behind if my memory is correct.

now who is gonna be at home between 11am and 2 pm GMT weekdays. some of us have to work so miss out on both chat room sessions. how about moving it to that time on a Saturday or Sunday.

go_vols, Finland uses also daylight saving time in summer. Hey, if you have 'own' timezones there, why wouldn't we make Finland Standard time, Sweden, Denmark, Greece... Hahaha

Helsinki, Finland(Zone 4b)

What for the chat can't be in the weekend also? I could hang there for a long time... just that I think there would be much more people..!

;)

EST is 5 hours behind GMT

evert - There are many adults who wouldn't have time on the weekends because of family activities.

I say leave the times where they are. We've discussed this in length before. Tuesday nights and Thursday mornings. If you can come, great. If you can't, we're sorry.

Evert, I'm sorry you can't enjoy chat at a convenient time, but you are young and can do without a little sleep one night of the week. Just take a nap before it starts. Think of it as a party given by a beautiful girl or your best friend, and you know you could stay awake for that. Who knows, Britney or JLo might be there. Probably not, but who knew George Harrison was a gardener?

guys it's so easy for you to say leave the times where they are because the times suit you.
wouldn't it be great if the times suited us in Europe and you couldn't get to the chatroom every time the door is open!!

Mark
just stirring not being nasty

Mark, you're only reading posts by a tiny percentage of the membership. In fact, the chat will never accomodate the majority, because people do have to go to work, to school, to soccer, to church, to bathe, to cook and eat, even to shop. We have to work our schedules around to include the things with highest priority, and the only way to make it so everyone can chat is to have it 24 hours. Third Age was a site for older people that was run like that, with volunteeer moderators so things didn't get out of hand. But I think Dave's programming and doing all the technical things necessary to make DG so great is far more important than his attention to our chat preferences and whims. Maybe in time someone will volunteer to moderate and the chat can be expanded. Say, you're a pretty intelligent fellow......

mark - so you know

the times don't suit me, either. I am not home Tuesday evenings - I tutor a high school chemistry student. Thursday mornings I'm getting ready for class and attending class.

My point is : you can only please some of the people some of the time.
