I saw one alive in Bastrop County, Texas April 14, 2012 (photo attached). It is Texas ironclad beetle (Zopherus nodulosus haldemani). Info on http://www.texasento.net/Ironclad.html

My daughter found one for my son's bug collection in the country outside of Schulenburg, Texas. Amazingly hard shell!
