Just noticed hundreds of these guys flying around our one door this morning. At first I thought it was a fly, but upon closer view I thought maybe it was a type of bee. I have a wildlife background from college, but I'm unsure as to what these little guys are exactly. I noticed that upon close inspection they are nearly translucent in the abdomen when viewed from underneath. Not all of them have two tiny triangles on the underside of the abdomen (I originally thought that that feature might have helped in IDing them). They are approximately 1/4 to 3/8 of an inch long. When flying their hind legs are straight out behind them. I'm from Northwest Ohio, haven't noticed these guys before, but like I said they are now swarming (hundreds) around our one door. Any thoughts or advice?
CLOSED: Fly or Bee What is It?
Look like flower/hover flies (Syrphidae) - harmless/beneficial.
