I have recently enlarged a garden bed (an extra 8 ft by maybe 9 ft) and I have been musing as to what to choose as the anchor plant.
I have not had success with miniatures butterfly bushes in the past but with this extra space I am thinking to give this plant another go but with a full size edition. I have seen bits and pieces around the web of the cultivar "Miss Molly". I am wondering how it compares to other full size butterfly bushes. Of course the flower is a unique colour (for a butterfly bush) and I get the impression from its description that it blooms sooner in the summer than other such bushes?
Does anyone here have experience yet with this newer cultivar?
Miss Molly Butterfly Bush?
Can you say a little more about what's happened to your mini butterfly bushes? Since the larger ones are the same species there's a good chance you'd have similar problems with them, but if you can talk a little more about the issues someone might have some advice that would help you be more successful with them regardless of what cultivar you pick.
This time it will be positioned much closer to our home and so more sheltered and I will be more careful to provide better drainage.
So other than blossom colour is "Miss Molly" any different in any other aspect(s) than any other full size BB?
As far as I know it's the flower color that makes it special since it's closer to red than most BB's. However--several sites mention that it tends to be more red in warmer southern climates and more purplish in colder areas so in zone 5 you may not get quite the color that they show in the pictures.
It's also not a full size BB--only gets to 4-5 ft. Of course in your zone where butterfly bushes will die back every winter and probably never achieve their full height potential maybe it won't be that much different than the full size ones.
