CLOSED: What Is "My" Bird Eating?

(Zone 5a)

I tend to call the birds in my yard mine. :) I am wondering what this Eastern Meadowlark is eating. I used to think grubs, but aren't they lighter in color?

Thank you for your help.

Looks like a pupa of a scarab beetle. The larval stages ('grubs') of several species feed on grass roots.

Thank you so much. I guess there'd be more than one kind underground. I do not know much about insects.

Such a pretty bird!

We do enjoy these birds. We have Western Meadowlarks as well, but they stay clear away from the house. We can hear both birds singing every morning in the warmer months.
