What do you use to keep weeds and grass out of Flower Beds

What do you use to keep weeds and grass out of your Flower Beds in form of sprays?

I have to tear out a flower bed because there is way to many weeds that came up this Spring.

I don't use sprays. I do use a pre-emergent on occasion though. It blocks the germination of seeds so you can't seed anything where you use it for three months. It works great in areas that you have just weeded and want to keep it clean for the rest of the season.

So, if I am weeding the flower garden.....after I get done and prior to mulching...I can use this pre emergent and not seed but I can put in a potted plant...is that correct?

They are talking about Preen, I would guess. No seeds but plants are fine.
Green grass can be killed with Poast.

Well that is great. No weeds then all summer. Then I can put more down in the fall.

Yeah, I use a product I think it's called Amaze. I have some drainage areas with lots of rocks. They are hard on your fingers to weed so I try to keep pre-emergent in them. Of course you can't use it in areas you want to seed, but it only lasts three months.

Last week I bought a HUGE tub of Preen - almost done weeding - then will put it down and mulch over. Going to TRY not to buy plants this year - but good to know that I can if I want to.

A newly hired girl spent 3 days cleaning and renewing the mulch in my beds. Never has it looked so good!

Countrygardner, those pics are very good.

I don't want to spend a lot of time weeding. But I want to plant some things. I just looked in Classifieds at a daylily sale with really good prices for clumps. But I don't know if I can use Preen with daylilies since they increase each year. Would Preen stop that?

Wauseon, OH(Zone 5a)

I would have to say NO because you are not droping seed from the daylilies.

Preen only stops seed germination.

You can plant anything other than seeds and then in three months if you want to plant seeds you can.
Whatever scientist came up with pre-emergent was brilliant.

Yes, If I could only rub it on my hips ---- it would be genius!
