Nery: It's a Crane Fly
They're pretty common where you and I are. They don't bite humans and they really aren't a garden "pest" per se. Their larvae can do damage to turfgrass roots, but other than that they're basically harmless to people and plants.

You are correct.

I've never been afraid of them, just a little annoyed b/c when they around (like right now) I can't leave the door open for more than one second, else I'll have 2-3 in the house hovering around. My pooches love to chase them and 'eat them (gross!).

Thanks, JD.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Common name for them in these parts are 'Gallie-nippers" (no idea why...)

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

The common name for them here starts with Stupid and the rest is unprintable...grin They get into everything, especially food at picnics and seem drawn to your face....
