Daily Bird Pics Vol. 433

Norman, OK

Love the lorikeet! One of my favorites at the OKC Zoo. They allow you to enter their enclosure and feed nectar to the birds.

Pic of a Northern Shoveler coming in for a landing and Least Grebe that was nearby.

BTW, the first Ruby-throats recently hit the coast http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html

Very nice pics from everyone!

Nothing grand here just the usual.....Pileated, Red-bellied, Common Grackle(more of those all the time!) and a Carolina Chickadee. I have switched from BOSS to the larger grey striped sunflower seeds after reading an article that said HOSP don't like them as well and it does seem to have cut the numbers down some.

I'll take 'just the usual' woodpeckers.

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

I'd take a few of those WP too, Nanny, and a few of Duc. ;) And some of Margaret's birds too. All great!
Susanlouise, I love you little Redpoll.
Great Shoveler shots, Red, in another month, I should start seeing them around here, too. I have not seen a Grebe yet.
GG, start warming up that broom of your, cause I saw a Purple finch at the feeder, last week.

I'll be watching GG. lol

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Susanlouise, your redpoll is a pretty one. Congrats on the return.

Red, great shoveler shots.

Nanny, "nothing grand here"-Please! I love the pileated and red-bellied. The grackles are so pretty and the dees-wow.

Burn, your jay and wp shots are beautiful too.

My birds are beginning to arrive in pairs now- Brewer's Blackbirds, House Finches. Of course there's still the male and female Nuttall's wps, but each time the end up on the same log, the male shooes the female away before I can get the pic.

Beautiful shots everyone!

snow on the ground. (about 2") so cardinals on the ground along with juncos. I thought that the juncos had left. Red bellied woodpecker came to sample the suet.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

The darn caption site I go to isn't working...I was going to add a caption to this one...
Now tell me, how often do you see a Hawk take a nap on a birdbath...aye? After it's Mourning Dove feast just earlier...with the evidence of a zillion feathers all over our back yard. This hawk napped for about an hour...bless it's heart :)

LOL Susan Louise, that is definitely a first for me!!

Here is a Red Winged Blackbird and some Cardinals. My place is overrun with Cardinals and the way it looks, there are going to a lot more of them this summer. LOL

Great pics Granny...anyday now we should start seeing the huge flocks of RWBB's return...can't wait! Not thrilled with the fellow Grackles though...HA!
this afternoon I saw a flock of over 500 Snow Geese heading north...it's that time of year again...WOOT! Gotta love it :)

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I just want to see ONE Snow Goose! lol

Susan: Tell your hawk to catch starlings instead.

Iris...ROFL...no kidding...HA!

Thank you Dave for starting one terrific thread. And all the fantastic contributions from everyone else. I'm so far behind, so can't possibly address everyone. Just wanted to share, how thrilled I was to see this lovely bird once again since last year. At first I couldn't decide ... 1st I suspected Pheobe, but the pretty didn't flip its tail upon landing. Too small to be Eastern Kingbird. Then, I remember, Great Creasted Flycatcher! Such pretty bird.

Oh, SusanLouse, it's nice to see you're back on the forum.

Too small to be a Great Crested Flycatcher, too! Also no orangey tones in the primaries. Maybe an early Empidonax?

My favorite cardinal came back this morning

BCH, cute cardinal. Resin, by "early". Do you mean an juvie Empidonax. The bird has moved on after the storm we had last night. If indeed, an Empidonax, I've a lifer.

Sorry, 'early' means arriving earlier in the spring than most do. If you normally expect a summer migrant to arrive around 10 March, and one arrives on 3 March, it's an early arrival. And it's the one that gets the worm ;-)

Resin

Edit - took another look at the pics in better light, and I'm fairly certain now it's an Eastern Phoebe.

Ditto, thanks. Early it's. Since I don't have any previous data to compare. But with the yoyo weather we've had, there is report Mourning Doves laying eggs in Feb. which was way early for the schedule.

Here is another pix of the flycatcher.

SusanLouise, great photos of the hawk. I've not seen one in a bath either. Sorry for the dove.

Granny, I love those cardinals-such pretty colors on both the male and female.

Lily, your bird sure looks pretty in your tree.

BCH, glad your cardinal is back. She sure is pretty.

I have a second house finch with some leucistic coloring. This slate-colored junco looked cute trying to stay on the perch in the wind. I think it heard me laughing because it jumped to another branch and gave me "the look".

This mockingbird was almost lying on the trig as it was braced itself in the wind.

I went to a conservation area on the river early this morning. It should get better in the coming weeks as migratory birds start to arrive.

First, a single Fairy Tern. They really are small.

At the other end of the scale, the largest Tern, the Caspian Tern in non-breeding plumage.

Another of the Caspian Tern in flight.

Then, a Great Cormorant

Finally, three shots of Black-winged Stilts. The ones in flight were taken a few days ago.

This sweet little bird had no fear of me. It was almost at my feet and too close to take a photo of on several occasions. It's a new one for me. A juvenile Red-capped Plover.

The last shot is of a flock of Little Black Cormorants, along with a Black Swan.

Great Egret. It was very wary and took off as soon as it saw me. I only managed this one shot.

More of the Little Black Cormorants. I've only included this to show the gorgeous colour of the eyes.

Pied Oystercatcher

Last, a Silver Gull

Love those Stilts Margaret!

Mount Pleasant Mills, PA(Zone 5a)

Great shots folks. Margaret, love that juvie. What a cutie pie.

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Those are fabulous photos Margaret...that little Plover has stolen my heart!!

This is a beautiful thread but with the added photos it is getting too long so I will be starting a new one. I will return with a new link.

Thanks to Dave for the gorgeous start and to everyone else for sharing your birds.

Here is the link to the new thread http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1245328/ .
