what is the difference between signs of plant sickness/disease and symptoms of plant sickness/disease

Signs are any visible manifestation of the underlying cause, such as chewed leaves, frass/exudate coming from a borer hole, fungal spores/mycelia, etc.; symptoms are the resultant appearance of the plant, such as discoloration of leaves/stems, wilting, etc. - see http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/3000/pdf/PP401_01.pdf
