I've just discovered, when I tried to order some blackcurrant bushes and jostaberries that it is illegal to grow them here in Virginia. I did some research and discovered why.
I also found out that certain hybrids of ribes are not illegal. Does anyone know the names of these hybrids. If not, can you suggest where I might find this information?
any info would be greatly appreciated... thanks
Blackcurrants illegal? Yes, in Virginia!
Lynn, I'm in SW VA and have ordered black currants (legally) that grow just fine. They have proven that the White Pine Blister/Rust is not actually connected to ribes. Call your extension agent.
I looked it up to be sure, and you are right about the law forbidding them is still on the books, but yesterday I was at a well-known and long established nursery near C'ville, and they sell currants. Only one variety dsays it's rust resistant.
