can anyone identify this spider please, it was found on a tree stump in my friends backyard in West Haven, CT. Thank you.

Araneus spp. can be highly variable in color pattern, making positive i.d.s from images difficult.

Could be that one too! As flapdoodle said, orbweavers can sometimes be difficult to tell apart!
