We were in town and saw these beautiful crepe myrtle trees, so I picked a small twig off of the tree and brought it home and put it in water.
It put out new leaves.....only to lose them.....which they do this time of year, and rooted..........a really really L O N G root, so I took it out back and put it in a pot. I should have taken pictures so I could post them. I might try it again so I can take pictures to post.
Anyone know how fast they grow? I am so excited! I have no clue where I will put it, but hopefully it can stay in it's pot awhile until I figure it out!

Crepe Myrtle Tree Twig rooted
We went to town today and I got some more twigs to root. I will try to document them as we go. Must get them into water. I put an aspirin in the water also.

I did this at a mall once. I put the tip cutting right into wet potting soil and it was not long before it rooted. Unfortunately I had to move when it was only a few inches tall. The person who was mowing the lawn for me mowed it several times before I put a little barrier around it. Then I moved again. It is now about eight inches tall, and in a dormant winter state.
It depends on what type you root how fast they grow. I moved this little plant again in the fall of 11 because there was not much sun where I had planted it.
The reason I moved it so much is because I had to move from Alabama to Illinois and then to a second house in less than a year. So the poor thing is getting drug through the mill. Poor thing. I really want this guy to survive, but given how many times it had to be moved only luck will tell.
I never start things in water as they have to acclimate to rooting in soil eventually so I just skip that step and go right to soil. Keep it in a shady spot and moist if you decide to start them in soil.
Thanks for the info! I have this one in a pot. The two new ones are in water.
I do some in each......with it in water I can see it!
Have a great day!

hey. i have a crape myrtle twig that grew, but it only grew leaves - no roots. i was surprised to find the leaves. i'm waiting for roots. because of the warm winter weather, i haven't seen any crape myrtles lose all their leaves here. how are you planning on growing your cuttings this season Texasgal?
Mine did grow leaves first also. It took several weeks for it to grow roots. It dropped it's leaves and then the roots continued to grow.
I have started two more twigs. They have only been in water about a week, so have not produced anything yet.
It did take quite awhile.......don't give up! Do switch out the water periodically. I put an aspirin in the water each time I switched it.
