CLOSED: I think I was bitten by a spider (pictures)

Toronto, Canada

I was bit on the ankle about 2 days ago, and I'm sure it was from a spider as we have a few roaming around in the house. I've never been bitten by a spider, so I'm not sure what my skin is supposed to look like. I think maybe it was stuck in my sock and was trying to get out, but I didn't notice it at all. It's itchy, swollen, leaking, and red. I'm not sure if it's infected, or if the spider was poisonous, or if this is just your typical spider bite. I don't want to go to the doctor only for them to say it's just a mosquito bite or something (They don't come out during winter anyway), and I'd like to avoid going to the doc altogether.

I don't know how to post multiple pics, so these are uploaded from tinypic.com. Here is the suspect: Tiny, brownish black with an interesting white design on the abdomen.

The abdomen looked more of a brown to me, but now I don't know since I killed it and threw it somewhere already :(

The spider is a cobweb weaver, nothing to worry about.
Your "bite" looks like an allergic reaction. It's entirely possible that you've been bitten by something (spider or not) and had an allergic reaction to whatever bit you. But it could be a reaction to just about anything. I suggest rub on benedryl =/. If it continues to spread, or you experience different symptoms, call the doctor.

It doesn't look at all like an insect bite, but it does look like you need to see a doctor and probably get on an antibiotic; the red is cellulitis (skin infection) and the weepiness just doesn't look good, especially on the lower leg, where the circulation is poorest. I'd be especially worried if you are obese, diabetic, have swollen legs or are otherwise not in the spiffiest health. Cellulitis can clear up by itself, or expand greatly in just a day or so; get it looked at (I'm a retired MD, but not one that thinks people need to run to the doctor for everything). You've heard of "flesh-eating bacteria... this is just how it looks when it starts out. Don't mess around with this.

I've been putting Polysporin on it. (Canadian Neosporin), and the look hasn't changed much. It could be an allergic reaction seeing how I've never been bitten by a spider before. it doesn't hurt, but sometimes it gets itchy. I will wait to see if there's any improvement before deciding to go to the doctor's.

There's a small amount of spiders around the house leaving messy little webs, but I usually don't see them. I felt kind of bad for killing this one, but I think the pattern on its back made me overreact a bit. I looked up cobweb weavers, and they can be quite colorful. I think I'll start educating myself about spiders now so I know which ones are dangerous and which are harmless.

Thanks for your knowledge :)
