Identify this spider/bug

A friend of mine found this spider/bug. He says it has 8 legs, and is about 3-4 inches big. Can anyone tell me what it is??

I was going to say Jerusalem Cricket but they only have six legs. Is your friend sure of the count?

Thank you so much! I am asking him about that, but looking at the pictures it really does look like that insect. He is in California, so I guess the location makes sense too! Thanks again.
