Pansies do okay if you want annuals.

My dianthus "China Pinks" have been blooming like crazy. I planted them fall of 2010 and they survived last winter and the horrible summer. They are so sweet.

Sybram,
for the winter I always plant lots of pansies.
They will survive ice and snow and be beautiful in the spring.
They will go untill April and May and at that time you will replace them with Zinnia (profusion variety the best).
Those are my annuals beds from last year.
Also cabbages do very well in our winter.
This year I have also planted Dusty Miller, which it is a perennial (takes teh heat and the cold)
I have lot of bulbs in the ground and just today I saw a lilium starting to pop out ...so excited.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

I, too, rely on pansies for most of my winter color, and just like you, drthor, I also have the purple cabbage and dusty miller this winter.

drthor, my question to you is off-topic but your photo in post 8925464 reminded me of a thread that I cannot now locate. That thread had a discussion about lining planting beds with rocks and the necessity of anchoring them with a concrete base. Was it you that described how you did it? If so, could you help me find the thread?

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

not me ... sorry. My rocks are just scatered in the ground. The soil moves here very much, so I opted to not anchoring them with concrete.

Thanks anyway...
